TIMEX x James Brand IRONMAN Watch
Hi, this is Alan. Thanks for reading, and for your interest in watches. My contact info is at the very bottom.
Here's a pretty cool watch with great colors. Timex and James Brand got together once again, this time with a digital watch. The result is a version of the legendary IRONMAN, in custom colors and branding, with all the usual functions and capabilities, and some new materials.
If you've followed my watch reviews and instagram, you'll know that I'm overwhelmingly a fan of analog watches, and in particular mechanical analog watches (though I feel that my watch collection is very diverse.) There is room for great digital watches, and the IRONMAN is right up there at the top of anyone's list. I've loved wearing this one!
Color is a huge part of this bespoke issue. Prominent is a bright yellow case, with orangey-red pushers, and finished off by a bright strap in sea foam green. The strap (below) is made by Tide from re-used ocean-bound plastic.
The upper right button activates INDIGLO.
Good look at the face with the D-shaped LCD screen, the bright resin case with bold black labelling and the pushers on the sides and front. As expected, this has the usual features: 30-lap memory, chronography, alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer, calendar. You get 100m water resistance, and the display is shatter-resistant.
GQ Magazine recently included the TIMEX James Brand IRONMAN in their list of "10 Best Timex" ! (Image from GQ).
Triangular black patches are sewn on to the sea-foam green strap. The mantra, below, relates to James as a maker of knives and tools of minimalist design. (Please consult local ordinances about knife-carrying). As mentioned above the strap is made from the re-use of ocean-bound plastics.
Below are small plastic granules by Tide, made from ocean plastic. The granules can be used to from "hard" plastic products, but can also be extruded to form fine filaments that can be manufactured into fabrics, like this strap.
"The evolution of triathlon as a distinct sport is difficult to trace with precision." The first modern triathlon was held in San Diego in 1974. The first IRONMAN triathlon was held in Hawaii, in 1978.
There was also a race held in France in 1902 called "Les Trois Sports," but instead of swimming, canoes were used.
Timex as official timekeeper. Dave Scott crosses the finish line, October triathlon 1984, in Kona, Hawaii.
This was the same race that Timex came out with the "Triathlon Watch," with 1500 sold initially to participants of this triathlon prior to the event, for $35.
In 1986, Timex acquired the rights to the Ironman name, and developed the Ironman Triathlon watch based on that initial 1984 Timex Triathlon watch.
What a nice issue. The colors, the multi-functions, the history. I may never do a triathlon, but I love having and wearing this watch with all the capability that has such a distinctive appearance.
Thank you for reading.
I hope you will like it.
Alan
