TIMEX Indonesia x MAKNA "IT'S TIME" Camper Watch.

Very limited edition Camper in a nice black and white bullseye design, with typography-inspired design!

This is the first international collaboration for MAKNA.
Hi This is Alan. Thanks, as always for your interest, and for reading these pages. My contact information is below. Unless stated, photos of the watch and box will be my photos, of my watch. Online photos and graphical images from MAKNA™️/thewatchco are included, and will be indicated. For simplicity, these other pics will be designated "from MAKNA™️." A few photos from Instagram users are included.

Here is a March 2019 watch exclusive to TIMEX Indonesia, made in collaboration with MAKNA™️. It uses the "Original Camper" as a base model, the 2015 quartz revival of the mechanical Camper Watch that began in the early 1980s and ran until the mid 1990s. Since 2015, there have been many collaborations between TIMEX and others, using Original Camper, so many, I have lost count/track.

This is the first international collaboration MAKNA™️. 250 pieces were made.

What is / who are MAKNA™️? Firstly, the Indonesian word makna translates to meaning, significance, purpose, and others, in English. A related word, maksud, means aim, intention, purpose, idea, point, and others. Not a bad name for a company having their stated objectives (below).

They call themselves, on Instagram, "an award-winning creative group and collective company," under the umbrella "Makna Group," with divisions of "Makna Creative," "Makna Talks," and "Makna Coffee." Below is a screen grab from their own site, on how they describe themselves.
In summary, this is a pretty cool Camper collaboration. Design-wise, the stark black and white bullseye motif is unlike any of the other Camper variants. It does remind me, if not in appearance but in terms of intentionality, and by the use of typography-led design, of the Camper collaboration between a London media publishing company and a German typography collective.

But beyond the physical design of this watch, the naming of the watch IT'S TIME, along with a conscious, deliberate considerations on the value of time, on "redefining time," and even on the very act of measuring time are the defining "vibe" of this collaborative effort. And again, these words are only on the very inside of the cardboard insert. They are not visible unless you remove the insert and unfold it, and find MAKNA's answers to the inevitable question, "It's time? Time for what?" Once again, from the insert:

It's time to do more of all those things listed, and ultimately to "appreciate every second and make it matter." Kind of mind-blowing. From a watch. Could wearing this watch, knowing what you know about the intention of its creators, inspire a kind of of consciousness and action commensurate with those intentions? It's kind of interesting to think about it, but I aim to find out.

I am grateful for having one of these. It appears that only 250 were made. Once I saw postings of it, I loved it. I then was fortunate to have help in obtaining it.

Thank you for reading.

I hope you will like it.

Alan

"... visual elegance."

The watch is called IT'S TIME, and was designed in Indonesia, © 2019 MAKNA™️. The watch was designed by Creative Director at Makna Creative, Tim Hendrawan, who was also the concept creator. "A collaboration between MAKNA and TIMEX to reevaluate the meaning of time."
(Above and below, from MAKNA™️)
Themes around the use, the passage, the significance, and the meaning of time run throughout the online MAKNA™️ material, as well as in the watch packaging. Everything from the watch, to the strap, to the packaging are in black and white. Not a lot of shades of grey. As if maybe time is not a gradient, but a quantum, you either have time or you do not. Maybe.
(From MAKNA™️)
Here the watch as it came of of the box. Crown pulled out, stopper in place. As mentioned, the watch uses the template of the Original Camper, the 36 mm solid lugs resin case, Japanese quartz movement, nylon strap. Unlike any of the other Camper variants I am aware of, this features a striking bullseye pattern. TIMEX and IT'S TIME on the dial. Next to IT'S TIME is the MAKNA™️ logo. 1-12 and 13-24 hour tracks, and hash marks for each minute/second, counted off by numbers every 5. Notice these numbers are all radially arranged, with the exception of 30 seconds/minutes. Kind of fun and quirky. Like they didn't want to have an upside-down 30.
Short gif from the MAKNA Instagram, prior to the release of the watch. Release date: March 25, 2019. This is a silent gif, but if you go to that Instagram link, and crank up the volume, the simulated sound of watch ticking (or it this highly amplified sound of real ticking?) is intense.
Watch comes in a long box, with inner clear plastic case and black cardboard insert, all covered by an embossed black cardboard outer sleeve (below).
The fixed lug nature of the Original Camper template is well shown here. Removable caseback (see the lip lower right) indicates Japanese movement, probably quite similar to this movement found in an Engineered Garments x TIMEX watch.

Barcode sticker on the back of the cardboard insert. Model TWLB10100. (Kami Gawi Berjaya is a Distribution, Retail, E-Commerce and Business Development & Investment Company based in Jakarta, and it appears that they were part of the the distribution/logistics process for the watch.)
On the side of the clear box is a set of latitude and longitude. What?! Sure enough, these are the coordinates for Jakarta! Pretty cool... I'm not sure what is MX01-1900-0000
From the product page for the MAKNA™️ TIMEX. 1,600,000 IDR is about 112 USD as of March 2019.
Let's take a good look at the dial. Firstly, notice the sort of "granular" nature to the white ink/paint comprising all the dial markings. It's kind of a cool effect. The dial contrast is high. Maybe the most obvious feature is the solid white circle, interrupted by the hour numerals, creating an inner, middle, and outer dial. This creates a "target" or "bullseye" appearance that so many people find visually appealing. I like how the zeros have the slash/line through them. The designer's Instagram indicates the typeface is a custom typeface, based on a Swiss typewriter, called "Makna Grotesque Mono."  Hands are standard light-activated luminous Camper hands.
Printing on the side of the clear plastic inner box. MAKNA™️ established in 2013. Designed in Indonesia.
IT'S TIME. It's time for what? If you didn't remove and unfold the black cardboard insert in the clear plastic box, you would never see this. It's about "Reevaluating the meaning of time," and includes a list of things that IT'S TIME for.

Just for fun, I inverted the image. Doesn't look bad, does it?

Black outer cardboard sleeve is nicely embossed.
This is an intense image, from thewatchco Instagram posted three days before the release, featuring a human hand, totally blackened by ink, holding the IT'S TIME watch.
I think it is so great that they printed Jakarta's longitude and latitude on the box, I had to show it again. This very limited edition TIMEX was designed in Indonesia, and it's great to highlight that.
Talk about Instagram, check out this amazing pic by IG user boylagi, who is showing his watch IN RED SQUARE in front of Saint Basil's Cathedral. This watch is getting around. I'm sure boylagi is making every minute, every second count.
