Girl Scouts Timex Watch, 1977
Hi again, this is Alan. (Contact: email). Here is a nice 26 mm diameter mechanical watch from 1977 a TIMEX watch for Girl Scouts. The model number is 39006, and it used movement 101. Runs well, very wearable. BTW, many of these pics were taken while I was on a walk through the woods during lunchtime, so there will be a sort of outdoorsy theme to them, natural light, etc.
Lots of green. All three hands, all dial markings, and the plastic band, with multiple holes. Dial background you can see is white, and there is very good contrast, and very easy time-telling.
Here's a medium-to-high res pic of the dial removed from the case. The font for the numbers seems "old fashioned" or maybe "quaint." Does anyone know the name of the font? Look at the 7. Hash marks contained in an an outer chapter of two circles, every 5 hashes are a bit thicker. TIMEX WATER RESISTANT (this was before the "wave" symbol). The date window is framed in green lines, and "flares out" toward the periphery, I guess keeping with the radial nature of a wristwatch. Of course, how could I not mention the "GS" inside the Clover of the Girl Scouts logo. The logo has undergone modifications over the years, and I believe this one originated in the 1940s, and therefore was evidently still being used in 1977.
Movement, with the blue plastic ring being the movement holder, to keep it from rattling around in the case.
The watch is thicker than most watches of this diameter, measuring 10 mm from the crystal to the caseback. This gives it more heft than most watches of this diameter (26 mm across, without the crown.)
Does anyone know if these watches were only available through your local Girls Scouts troop, or could you get them at Woolworth, K-Mart, and other places where TIMEX were sold? I've seen many different TIMEX scouting watches, both Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts, including Cub Scouts watches and Brownies watches (with the same shape logo as this one, but instead of GS, had inside that dancing spirit, the "Brownie," or Brùnaidh, a sort of helpful hobgoblin of Scottish folklore.
This is the "metadata" found on the dial of many TIMEX over a long time period. Sometimes it's clearly seen when you look at a watch, sometimes it's seen with great difficulty, often obscured by the edge of the crystal, and sometimes it's totally hidden under the case. In this case, it was totally hidden, only revealed when the movement was removed. The model is 39006, the movement is 101, and the year of manufacture is 1977.
(Nothing to do with watches, but I saw someone selling this nice 1950s GS camera.)
On the inside of the caseback is stamped CASE FRANCE TIMEX, and the letters OPU applied in green ink. It's hard to see in this picture, but the rim of the caseback has in its groove a black rubber gasket for water protection.
Logo on an old GS duffel bag.
The chrome-plated case has sort of a "cushion" shape, common with many TIMEX watches of varying sizes during the 1970s.
The thick green rubber strap with many little "windows" is really great. It's in excellent condition, as is the watch overall.
It's a nice "little" watch, maybe only 26 mm diameter, but the height of 10 mm, more than usual for a watch of this diameter, gives it some added wrist presence. The green and the white is a very pleasing combination, and the green really reminds me of nature. In really good, crisp condition, running beautifully. From 1977. If you want to see what else was going on in 1977, have a look at this link. One thing glaringly missing from that article was the release of the Sex Pistols' first album, which was on October 28, 1977. They mention the Ramones, in 1977, but not the Sex Pistols. How could you overlook that.
Anyway, thanks for reading about this Girl Scouts mechanical TIMEX watch. I hope that you will like it.
Alan
